Nothing says the Fourth of July more than firing up the grill to prepare a meal, and the latest research from a nation-wide survey by American Farm Bureau Federation shows that Americans’ favorite foods are affordable this summer with a meal costing less than $6 per person.
The average cost for a summer picnic for 10 people was $57.20 or $5.72 per person according to the survey. Their summer picnic menu for 10 consisted of hot dogs and buns, cheeseburgers with buns, pork spare ribs, deli potato salad, baked beans, corn chips, lemonade, chocolate milk, watermelon for dessert, and ketchup and mustard. The survey brought in results from more than 22 states.
As Americans, we’re fortunate to have a consistent, high-quality supply of meats and poultry that can be grilled or prepared any number of different ways due to American farmers and ranchers who provide abundant and affordable food products throughout the year.
Farmers and ranchers are also working hard to prevent hunger for the less fortunate. Organizations of Nebraska farmers and ranchers, such as Nebraska Farm Bureau, who sponsors an annual Can Care-A-Van food drive that collected more than 201,000 pounds in 2013 for local Nebraska communities, and We Support Agriculture, who donated $2,500 to the Food Bank of Lincoln’s Veteran’s Mobile Pantry Program, work to fight hunger across Nebraska.
